Two days Training program on PESA and CFRR: Claim-making process and use of webGIS and mapping

ATREE’s Samnapur team jointly organized a two-day workshop on the CFR claim making and mapping process with Adim Navjagriti Seva Sansthan, Mawai. Around 60 participants from 12 villages participated in the workshop, including FRC  members.The workshop started with the opening session of Charan Parte, convenor  of ANSS. He set up the background with the information on the geographical profile  of Mawai and the status of FRA implementation. Balram Padoti, Senior FRA  Coordinator then gave a brief introduction of the FRA and history of historical  injustice to the forest-dwelling communities. Shobha Paraste gave information on  “Nar Vystha” (Traditional Village system) in the Gond community. 

Screening of the movie ‘Hamar Jangal Hamar Adhikar’ was done in the post-lunch  session. The movie is based on Community Forest rights claim-making efforts in  Chhattisgarh state. Balram Padoti led the session on the difference between CR and  CFRR. It was followed by question-answer session. Participants asked questions  about conflicts that arise in villages while claiming traditional boundaries.

Post film screening, Mohit Mahajan led the session on the steps of CFR clam making.  The process of documentation for submission of CFR claims was discussed in detail. 

The second day of the workshop started with resource mapping (Najari Naksha)  exercise. This activity was facilitated by Mohit Mahajan. Participants engaged with  the process of seeking agreement on customary boundaries during this exercise.  Participants learned about the use of ATREE’s WebGIS for understanding  administrative boundaries.  

The workshop closed with a discussion on six six-month plans for CFR claim making  in 10 villages. All participants shared their suggestions and showed strong  willingness to initiated claim making process in their villages.
