At the event held in Raipur to mark 20 years of Khoj, the organization’s journey and achievements were shared. On this occasion, a strong woman leader from Bastar, Mrs. Mahanti (Gram Sabha President, Ghatkawali), was specially honored.
Mrs. Mahanti received this recognition for her active leadership in the village, her role in resolving conflicts peacefully, and her efforts to strengthen community forest management. Her work has not only reinforced the role of the Gram Sabha but has also increased community participation.
Under her leadership, Ghatkawali village has made significant progress in understanding and implementing Community Forest Resource (CFR) rights. The villagers are now making their own decisions regarding the conservation and use of their forests and resources.
Experts and representatives present at the event appreciated Mrs. Mahanti’s work, noting that such grassroots leadership is the real driving force behind sustainable development and community empowerment.
The Khoj event also demonstrated that with the right guidance and collective efforts, meaningful change is possible at the village level.
This recognition is not just an achievement of Mrs. Mahanti, but a symbol of the hard work and unity of the entire community, pointing the way toward even stronger transformations in the future.
For the past four years, the organization ATREE has been working in Ghatkawali village, undertaking initiatives to develop women’s leadership and to engage women more actively in forest management.
